JL 12w7 vs Brahma 15

My store carries Image Dynamics, JL,Kicker,MTX,Eclipse,Orion, and Diamond. All of these manf. make some killer subwoofers. I have installed more w7's than anything else because jl has built up so much "hype" . I have never had a w7 not preform up to its potential and have never had a problem 50hz and below.

yeah its box install, but given the right box and right amp, the w7 may perform well, but not for $600. i would rather spend my money on an idmax or brahma , as they sound better and can get louder than a w7. bumpin03, im not sure if you should hook it up to your amp, that w7 is only 750 watts rms, i know that it prolly won't blow it, but its passed its rms max, so its gonna be loud, but i still think your brahma would beat it in the spl and sq department considering its more efficient and sounds a lot better!!!

It is 750 RMS but we all know it will take much more as long as its clean.I've put 500w on w0s and not had a problem. Its all how you do your tweakin. And yes abercrombie boy is right about boxes, if its the slightest bit out of whack(size, portdi, leaky, braced, etc)

it changes everything.

yeah it will take more, but why put 500 watts more on a sub if its rms is 750? yeah it may be able to take it, but seriously, you cant have your gain up at all when running the sub. sure it may handle a lot of watts, but generally, any sub doesn't like to be pushed that much over on watts. Yeah ill get argued on this, but generally speaking, the jbl will take that w7 past its excursion limits. Bumpin03 remember that!!!

But for the record, i still say the brahma will win bc of the cone area, effiecieny of the woofer, sq of the woofer, and bc its built better than the jl w7. And im talkin out of my butt lol!!!!!!!!

phattyex,

Just to clarify, I was talking about 50Hz and above being a trouble area for the W7. Anyone saying the W7 is sluggish in the 50Hz and below range would be lying. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif It only mattered because of the comment about the W7's versatility. Anyone with the money for a W7 should be expected to have the midbass to cover that range anyways, right?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

for me...the price difference wasn't that great. I got my brahma for $440, but I could have gotten my 12w7 for $500 if i bought a box there too (which im going to have to anyways for the brahma). I just heard a lot of people saying the brahma would perform better and it has a great combination of SPL and SQ, and for me thats the perfect sub. I dont want insane SPL with no SQ. But I also dont want all SQ, such as the kappa perfects. Most people said I would be disappointed if I bought the w7, so I listened to them and went with the Brahma. Hopefully I'll be happy IF IT EVER COMES!!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif

I've never had a problem w/ 50hz and above either. I don't think we have ever had a problem hitting any freq level(except for one ported enclosure that I made).Everyone who has written reviews has only had the sub for a limited amount of timeand I don't feelany of them used it or tested it to its full potential and it got a lot crap for its huge price tag. The only subs I have ever heard that sounded better weren't anything made by a car audio manufacturer. My english teacher always said I used run on sentences.

Phat, you better listen to audiolife, he knows more than you think he does. hes heard the w7, and he even pointed out to a person that it has no midbass. OTher ppl like jlaine, rangerman, and a few others will agree with me on this that he jl w7 is too much hype!!!!!!!

well lets see depending on the car getting "extra" midbass costs more than the extra 300 on the woofer..location of the drivers are harder to come by.unless you are willing to spend 60 bucks an hour @ 100 hours to stick a 10 in your dash. funny thing is the old store i work at sells the w7 pumps it up even but in realty they sound worse than other sub..sure it is awesome at under 50 hz but show me real music that has that real authority at that level.. say rap music? umm that is computer bass ... boosted and crappy sounding. above 50 hz are you willing to say the jl is as good as a usd sub? an image dynamics idmax or idq or idw? i mean for the pure music side of it you actually think its even better than a w6 above 50 hz? numbers i seen from w7's in spl are good espeacially at the low end but the numbers achieved by lesser cost subs is right along side of the w7 isnt it? hmm some even play above 50 hz open and airy.. my return question to you is WHY SPEND THE EXTRA 200-300 FOR SOMETHING THAT ISNT 200-300 BETTER IF EVEN ANY BETTER AT ALL?

I'd suggest then you get the enclosure made right for the brahma. Get some help from Dan Wiggins or someone else very knowledgable to give you the specs. I think in this case, the Qtc is going to be very important. If they're both sealed, I'm fairly certain that the brahma will win in SPL. Maybe you should try the adire forum at http://www.teamamp.com

About the sound q, before you do any comparison at all, try to get the most precise definition of sound q from him. For me, sound q involves smooth response, AND almost, if not more importantly, transients. This means how fast does the woofer respond? You need to find some music with hella fast kick drums in it or bass that is really really complicated, and, you will need to get a panel of judges to do listening that don't know what they're listening to.

After all this has been done, I'd love to hear the story!

Kinda off the subject of the original post here......

but to test SQ, i'd suggest one particular song. whoever's woofer makes it thru this song without sounding muddy at one point or another wins.....i somehow doubt either can do it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Mindless Self Indulgence's cover of Method Man's "Bring The Pain"

i gotta question for you why the heck would you test sq on a at best crappy recording such as that? you have any idea what people use to detirmin sq? yuh they use the stuff your mom would prolly like and they want it to sound real!!!

Audiolife, you and I got into this about the W7 a while back and both had about the same outlook on them. Way overrated, way overpriced, and a bit lacking in certain area's. All arround, I believe that JL put too much promotion into this speaker and not quite enough R&D to live up to its hype. I have heard the W7 line many times, and it is by no means totally dissapointing, however, I believe that the company's flagship line, the W6, still has the upperhand.

Getting right down to it, as SQ is merely in the eye of the beholder; for lack of better terms, and SPL can be metered, this would allready be an unfair comparrison between the Adire and the JL.

Pound for pound, I have no doubts that the Adire is Equally capable, if not superior, to the JL. The Adire simply offers its performance at a far better price.

IMO- based on listening and the numbers- I would prefer the Adire either way.

take it easy,

-zane
