The obvious and IMO- one of the most important comparrison factors. The test tracks. There are several excellent recordings available.
One that I have recently became very fond of is "Insatiable" by Darren Hayes. He was the singer for the band Savage Garden, and now is solo. The song is more of a romantic pop-balad with a punch. It does cover a good range musically, which is why I have been using it as a key resource track in tuning my own system.
