JL 10W7 making a "pop" or "knock" sound

OK,

So I've had this JL 10W7 in the H.O Box for about 3 years or so now and it's been making this knocking or popping sound for a while now when playing certain bass notes (usually quick hard hitting ones in rap songs). What seems really odd to me though is I can play a 40-50hz test tone through this sub and make it throw like 3-4 inches of excursion and it does it without breaking a sweat (no knocking or popping). But yet if I throw some rap on or something else that has those quick split second hard hits in it it makes that popping noise. Even weirder yet (to me) is that these notes aren't making the sub move nearly as far as the 40-50hz tones were. And I'm almost positive it isn't clipping because my HU volume is only on 16/35, and my gain is set to less than half way.

I was trying to tune my amp tonight using the 50hz tone and played it back at 17/35 on the HU and then turned my gains up till the note started to sound a little "different". I think (not sure how noticeable its supposed to be). Gain ended up around 6/10 with the 50hz tone. So I though "great I'm all set". Played back some bass heavy stuff at the same volume and it started popping/knocking.

Just seems odd to me that it wont pop with 3-4 inches of excursion on a test tone but will with 1-2 inches on music.

By the way my amp is an Audison LrX 5.1K, HU is a brand new Kenwood DDX419, and currently running the subs using a AudioControl Lc2i (need the extra RCA voltage cuz I can't turn my HU up high enough to get the effective 4v out of the HU Pre-outs due to my car having the monsoon amplifier making the stock speakers very loud at a low volume on the HU.)

Any help on this would be awesome. Is there anything I can do or is it just time for a new sub?

Also another thing I noticed while playing this one certain song was that after a certain note hit, there was a short pause after the hit and I noticed the sub slowly move out to its "home position" if you will. Does that sound like a coil issue too? Should a sub ever do that? Or should it pretty much always be instantly in its "home position" after a hard hit like that?

A better way to word it was it looked like a slow inhale

Push on it u hear any coil...

What exactly would I hear if something is wrong. I never pushed on a brand new sub so don't really have a reference as to what a new one vs one with problems would sound like.

Alright I just pushed the subs cone in and if I pushed it nice and centered I don't hear any scratching. But if I push it in more from the top or right side of the sub I do hear some scratching. At the same time if I push it in more from the bottom or the left side it doesn't scratch. Does this mean my voice coil has become deformed in some way?

Time for a recone or new woofer my man

****. Was afraid of that haha. Well I guess my options are either buying a new 10W7 since I already have the box for it. Or maybe upgrading to a couple of 12s. Anybody here had any experience with the sundown SA-12s? Or maybe suggest some other good 12s that would put my 10W7 to shame? I'm thinking maybe around 500-600$. And also I only have about 1300-1500W @2ohms to work with.
