i have this sub http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=GTO1200B&ser=GTS&cat=SUB, and when i turn it up loud thers a dodgy noise coming from the ported hole bit(cant really explain it). so i covered the ported hole with a towel and the noise went. but covering the hole makes the subwoofer move foward and back more if you know what i mean.

i just basically wanted to know would this damage the sub in anyway???

thanks ppl 4 any help & opinions //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

yea its coming from the port, its like a flapping noise or something vibrating, would covering the port damage the sub cos its seems when i cover it this "noise" goes

If its a tubular port, then thats normal, ports like that ****, its Air Noise/Port noise, better to go with Sloted port... plus blocking the port if the box and port is tuned for the sub will make the sub sound worse than it should.

if the port isnt flared at both ends though, you could try replacing it with a flared port... otherwise go slot port or try a sealed enclosure, if you're sub if designed for it, check the website for you're sub for enclosure recommendations if there is any... usually if you block the port, wich means sealed, then the box size would have to change for the subs sealed recommendations if any. Ported is louder though, so try changing the port or build/buy new box with sloted port.

yes its a tubuler port and it sucks and throws air in out but, but it makes that weird sound.. so blocking the port makes that sound go but im not sure if it will damage the sub or will it bottom out ???

thanks

good thing i never fell for those ported prefab packages. No offense to you guy I kno people make mistakes. If you barely got it I would consider returning it, then buying ONLY the GTO sub and build yourself a slot ported box. Way worth it and probably cheaper depending on whether you have the tools. If not, any kind of tools are a good investment. Try it out.

by blocking that port you can either make it a sealed box or just reduce that amount of port area greatly. Think about it this way. What are the specs for a sealed box? about 1 cuft. Ok but you have a ported box which should have about 2.25 cuft. If you completly seal off that port its like if you have ur sub in a 2.25 SEALED box. That is way off from 1 cuft right? If the towel doesnt completly seal it, it will just mess up the tuning, area, etc and probably sound real shitty.
