I've never agreed with this statement.
If even part of your belief in God is based on the fear of the consequences of not believing...then you haven't truly accepted him into your heart and chances are very good that we (meaning I the atheist and you the "believer") are going to suffer the same consequences in the afterlife (assuming God does exist for the sake of argument). Going thru the motions of claiming to have accepted God on the basis of attempting to avoid eternal damnation (if this even occurs in the afterlife, which isn't agreed upon even amongst believers) isn't a true belief or a true acceptance of faith.
If you remove eternal damnation and judgment day from the equation would you still believe?
I would rather be steadfast in my convictions regardless of consequence than let fear dictate my life and use religion as a crutch.
That's my opinion, anyways //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
