I would go with a Japanese bike because the aftermarket and parts market is great for them.

But I've always wanted a Ducati Monster 998.

IMO- go Italian. every rider on the street has a jap bike, not that the Honda and Yamahas are dirt, but the Italian lines are so much classier. and IMO better built.

lol the guy with the honda make like 30 an hour. The jap bike I'd buy is a gsxr to be honest.

i say Japanese bike for the main reason of parts are very available, and if the re sale is bad why don't u take advantage of that and get a used R1 or something cheap and put a little money in it yourself? but on the cruiser end screw Harley, waste of money Honda and Suzuki make very nice cruisers Suzuki more so than Honda but i have a friend who got a Honda shadow for 5k and put less than 1k in it now its blackberry metallic, chromed out, and loud as hell its a very nice bike for less than 6k but its ultimately up to what u prefer.

but why buy a 5k bike and put 6-7grand into it instead of just getting a 13k bike and being good stock?

handling it will with a tire change. I also don't like gaudy modded to hell looking bikes, I would keep it factory looking.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Victory. These new Victory bikes are sweet! If I ever get another (Had a Harley until my son was born) it'll be something like this.
