issue with RF, Kicker

I got the L5 combo (ported box and sub) from circuit city. It is pre-wired inside at 2ohms. I got it hooked up to a RF P800.2 . Now i am just using once channel so at 2 ohms it should be sending out 400 watts. this sub is rated at 550 rms. So here is my question. Y the hell is it the third time i blow this sub. (thank god for warrenty) could it be the amp is sending out more power ? i have no idea but im getting pissed about having to go back and exchange it. Im starting to think of gettin something with higher rms but i think thats is the highest that cc got. what is yall opinion, thnaks

oh boy imma get flammed.......i have the gains all the way...but still shouldnt the sub be able to handle it

you deserved to be kicked in the nuts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

subs aren't made to handle clipping. no wonder you are going through so many subs. i'm suprised kicker warrantied the subs. please read the gain setting tutorial

when and how does clippin occur

basically clipping is when the soundwaves become squared or clipped instead of round. the gain is just used to match your amp's input voltage, with that of the output from the headunit. since every deck has different levels of output, gain or input sensitivity is needed. it's not a volume knob

u know any other links to where i can set my gain. the one in the site isd not workin and thanks 4 explaning clipping

get a dmm. get a 50 hz. 0 db test tone. set your deck the way you like it. turn the volume up 3/4 the way up. take the rms output of your amp, multiply that by the ohms, then find the sq. rt. of that number. that is your target voltage. so say a 100 watt amp at 4 ohms would be 20 volts. disconnect your sub. turn the gain all the way down, bass boost, etc. play the test tone. set your dmm to AC. put the leads on the positive and negative of the amp. turn up the gain until you reach the voltage you had figured out earlier.

yea those links are not working for me..

ok so let me see . my amp would be sending out 400rms at 2 ohm. the speaker is wired for 2 ohm so i multiply that and get this 400 x 2 = 800. so now i find the sq rt of this and that is the voltage i need to reach?

yes. your voltage would need to be 28.28.
