As far as I have ever heard/read, it should work just as well. Main reason to use the colored, coated wiring would be for looks (if leaving it bare), but if you are going to cover it with wire loom anyway, then why not save a little?

i found the high end aftermarket cable to be more flexible.

but welding cable is fine

Tis good, make sure you get the one with 4 million strands. The lucky sob I am got the 3/0ga 12 strand wire, and now all I do is hit my friends with it. It's like a copper bat.
