Is this too much power?

My friend wants to upgrade his sound system. He wants at least 1000 watts for low end. The amp he is looking at is the MTX 1501d. The subs will be two Alpine Type-R 12's with dual 2 ohm voicecoils. Total load on system will be 2 ohms. I know that these subs are rated for 300w rms, but I have read that you can put around 900w to them just fine. Anyway, do you think that 1000w would be okay for these subs?

If he practices some restraint with the volume knob, they should hold up just fine. Unless you turn the volume way up, they are not going to see the full potential of that amp. Think of the amp as a high-HP engine and the volu e knob as the accelerator pedal and the amp as the transmission/diff. If you are easy on the accelerator, the trans and diff will hold up even if they cannot withstand the full power of the engine. Really romp on the gas and the weaker components will die horribly. Just cause you have the power doesn't mean that you have to use it.
