ok ive never had to setup a dinner for a group of people at a restaurant before. the most people ive went with was 4, so we didnt need any reservations or anything. well its my gf's 21st birthday tomorrow and she wanted to go to a particular restaurant (not even fancy, just a nice place to eat). so we went into the restaurant and asked, if they took reservations, and if so could we get 1 for 11-12 people. they said yes, and said

" There will be 1 check for the table, and a 17% gratuity."

i almost shit a brick. you're telling me, to my face, that you are forcing me to pay 17% gratuity? i do not have a problem with paying this amount, hell i was already gonna do a 20% tip, but TELLING me what i will need to tip the next night?! WTF? i almost told them to **** off, but i couldnt because its where my gf wanted to eat and get drinks at //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

so my question is...is this normal? do they force a certain tip when you make a reservation, or bring more than a few people to dinner? and if my service sucks im still forced to pay the 17%. what kinda shit is this.

/rant

edit: unless im an idiot and gratuity and tip aren't the same thing...

i went outto eat with 7 people at a bar/resturant in OCMD and on the menu it said parties of 6 will pay a 22% gratuity twas gay was like a 170 dollar bill for like hamburgers and sodas

wow, i guess i was just totally ignorant to this shit.

like i said i have no problem paying the 17%....but why the **** do you call it a gratuity? i wouldnt have a problem if they just called it a "party fee" instead

edit: this site is SOOO ****ING SLOWWWWWWWWW

i think they do that cause sometimes in large groups people just assume that other people are gonna pick up the tip and try to dip out with out pitching in. so they make it mandatory and everything is fine for the server. i know a lot of people that are servers, they work their *** of and dont make shit, i always over tip..as long as they were decent and didnt give me lip for something

i can understand that...but the word gratuity, to me at least, means i choose what i tip. like i said, call it a "party fee" and ill be fine with it.

Dine and Dash!
i have dine and dashed before, but it was at denny's and it was because they guy was a big POS, could not get a single order right, everyones drinks were empty for 10 mins at a time, didnt really speak a lick of english, and was seen just chatting it up with his buddies the whole time.

we said **** you and denny's and dipped out. that was the only time i have ever done it, and it was only because i was infuriated. i have no problem leaving a nice tip. all you really have to do is a decent job and you will get your 15%. do a better job and you get a bonus.

in Germany, gratuity is added no matter what, everywhere. The price of your meal in the menu, already has the gratuity added, with any applicable tax. So when you order something, you know exactly how much you are going to pay for it, waitress comes with a bag full of change, she adds your total in front of you, you give her cash, and leave.
