today at my school i was trying to help out a fellow school mate by telling him what would be most effeciant to hook up 2 12" L7s. i told him that he should prolly buy some 1 ga. power wire, a fused distribution blck, and run 4 ga. into his amps if he is gunna get 2 amps, and also 4 ga. from the amps into a non fused bustion block and ground one 1 ga. wire. That is what did and it works out to its full potential. This kid comes up to me and is like you got wire THAT BIG? and i told him why and everything and his *** is gunna tell me that he hook up his 1700 watt lanzar amp (thinking his amp is 1700 watt rms or something) to his L7 with 10 ga. power wire and i was like yeah of course you will hear sound and what not but that is not what you are respose to hook up to an amp that requires a larger ga. power wire. I am correct arnt i or am i totally ignorant to the fact of wiring amps? PLEASE HELP ME OUT!

It will be entirely dependant on the actual output of his amp. If it is 3 or 400 watts then 10awg should actually be sufficient. ( I wouldn't imagine that it is, though, if he's trying to successfully drive a pair of L7s with it...)

There's never anything wrong with overkill as far as wiring goes, however, and if you've already got a run of 1/0awg cable run then you have plenty of room for expansion later. It boils down to do you want to go through the trouble of running it now or later (since we all know how contagious this audio addiction is so there will be a desire to upgrade later....)

yeah thats what i was trying to tell him. You can run some speaker wire as your power and itll supply power to your amp but if you seriouse about hooking up a system might as well go with what is recomended to get the full potential of you amp. if not then just get a smaller amp. Why waste money on a nice amp and then feed it some shit wire

no you are right. each one of those amps comes with 4 guage power\ground terminals (im assuming he is talking about the kx1200.1 to each l7 or something of that nature), so they each are designed to work with 4 guage wire. a 0awg wire is roughly twice as large yada yada.

you should be thinking about the current draw and all this, but 0 guage should be plenty up to around 2~3kw daily.

besides, that lanzar amp was doing nowhere near 1000w. i would power my tweeters with that amp. he is a compltete moron, and please feel free to show him this page.

just to clarify, if you do NOT run large enough wire and fuse at the battery, you will end up burning the entire piece of wire, and run the risk of setting the car on fire too. tell him its okay if he wants to risk his life though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

oh yes you better believe he will hear this tomarrow!! and i really hate how people these days that dont no much about car audio talk about their 2000w systems when they have like 500rms watts thinking their 2000 max watt amp out powers a jl 1000/1. man some people make me wanna just straight up slap a *****

Well you had to make a post asking if 10 gauge wire was sufficient for an amplifier that may be 1700 rms....
