Is there still high-end car audio?

I couldn't have ranted it better myself. I don't want dolphins leaping to my music, I just want music.

I gave up on flac years ago, I needed a mp3 player with lots of storage and drank the Apple kool-aid (160 gb classic). A massive flac to apple lossless conversion ensued. Fortunately most players support iPods these days.

I just sold a car that had an earlier version of the Alpine CDA-9887. It was a nice deck. Alpine hasn't even noticed that no one has blue gauges any more.

My problem is that my new car (vw gti) has a really nice looking double din head unit, and it sounds decent, but its interface is rubbish. I want to stick with double din. The options in the aftermarket have me considering a $1600 flush of money to the upgraded OEM head unit with nav just for a responsive screen.

The integration of the head unit with the rest of the interior is so complete that I am thinking I should have just gotten a Mazda. (just kidding)
