is running an amp under power on purpose bad?

im looking to buy a bxi2006d, but i only plan to use 1500w of power, if i set the gains with a DMM to 1500w, obviously the gains will be down considerably, is this a problem?

no, in fact it will be better for the amp. That amp will probably only put out 1600@1 ohm anyways.

I really dont think there that overrated. They put out pretty clsoe to rated IMO.

and for anyone interested, the combo is a bxi2006d going to turn it down to around 1500w, being paired up with a hdc3 12 in 2 cubes at 37hz, all of which is going in my regular cab dodge ram.

anytime the volume is turned down you're only getting a little bit of power out of it anyway.

I did the same thing with my 25 to Life Punch 150. I set it to give me 600 watts @ 4 ohms mono, and even double checked it @ 2 ohms stereo with a test load!
