is maxing out an amp really all that bad

you would think since manufacturers match amps and speakers/subs to just under the rms of rating of the speakers that it shouldn't be a problem. Aren't amps designed to handle running hot??

ive done it without major problem.

they are designed to run pretty warm, yes, and also designed to dissapate heat as well. if they generate more heat than they were designed to handle, then they eventually break. generally what causes that is running them at a non suported ohm load....

Why not just go with an amp that's more than you need instead of less.
