Is it ok to hook up car subs to home stereo receiver

A sub is a sub in a mechanical sense, they work the same way. You just have to match impedances, most home receivers cant handle a load under 4 ohms.

ive done it before but this was back in the day when i was 13 and my friend thought some $45 sub from walmart would slam.....just took the wires and hooked one to the positive and other to negative. BAM!!! it worked..but it wasnt in a box so it sounded $hitty free-air

You generally need a plate amplifier to run a sub...and then run the signal from the receiver to the plate amp.

this reciever was around 400w so i just hooked it up straight to that

most h/t receivers are 8 ohm i believe--damage may occur if you put too heavy a load on em as most car audio subs are 4 or 2 ohm.

I rememer back in the days when I was about 14 I hooked up a 10" mtx road thunder in a custom pyramid shaped box to my kenwood receiver(200 watts or so) and that !@#$ banged believe it or not, and took it like a champ, everyone used to want to come over just to see and hear my room shake, now it's the opposite, everyone wants to be in my car to hear it bump

I have sub(s) on my HT amp. Its rather old so i dont care if it breaks.

Sometimes i switch it back to my 12" tower speakers.
