Is it me, the amp or the sub? 500/1 Alpine Type R

I blew my Eclipse Aluminum SVC 12 so I replaced it with an Alpine 12" Type R.

At the same time I replaced the my soundstream Rub. 1002 with a JL 500/1.

Given the power factor of the amp, despite the 500w difference between the two, the JL amp perfectly match with the Type R. But for some reason it doesn't sound as loud as the Eclipse nor does it sound as clean.

I'm using a 1.25 cu. ft sealed box.

Put the Rubi back in. That was a down grade if you ask me.

I'm using all factory component in my car, hence I wanted the JL for the signal sensing. When I had the soundstream in there, I had to use an external signal turn on unit which was a hassle. I think it just needs a little tuning.

I think another problem is my box is slightly too big for this speaker. It doesn't sound very tight but does sound decent when hiding the lows.

Sealed box is recommended at ~.75 to 1.0 my box is 1.25.

There's your problem.

To your first question,"Is it me, the amp or the sub?".

It is you. If you want a type R to be loud, you're going to have to make room and go with a ported.

The Type R simply doesn't like a sealed alignment and will demonstrate that to you by never living up to its potential while in a non-vented enclosure.

1.25 for a sealed box is pretty big for the Type R. If you are going to seal it try a smaller box. I bet it get's pretty sloppy when you play it loud because the box is so big.

But I agree with all the others, the Type R's love a ported enclosure, so give it what it wants. You are already at 1.25 so just go a little bigger, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.6 if you are really in a space crunch. What are the dimensions of your box, something like 12x12x15? If you did 13x13x17 you would be at 1.67 before port displacement and it only extends the box by a MAX of 2 in one direction and 1 inch in the other two dimensions. I think that would work just fine for you.
