is it better to strap 2 amps together or to wire them individually?

1 power and 1 ground of 1/0 is too much. Like I said, I prefer to ground to the battery. When running a system with multiple batteries, maybe thats just me.

well, back to the original question. well, first, you have to be sure the amps can handle the strapping. if they can, then the manual comes with very specific instructions on how to hook them up synced/strapped. next, the ohms load. for instance, let's say that you have d4 subs, and you can strapp the 1200's to 2400@2ohm, but it will only go as low as 2ohm. well your only option would be to wire the subs to 4ohm strapped, or just individually @ 2ohms. i'm pretty sure that is what you are looking at right now. on the other hand, if they are d2 coils, then you can wire them up and down to 2ohm, and it will be fine.
