is cone area really king????

well I have done some research on the subject of "cone area is king".... I compared the motor force and the cone area of 5 sa8's, 2 sa12's, and my atomic apxx 18. The results are as follows...

5 sundown sa8 d2s-

cone area:251.33

combined motor force (bl):85.69

3 sundown sa12's

cone area:339.29

combined motor force:64.92

atomic apxx 18

cone area: 254.5

motor force: 26.88

Now, the sa8s are the lowest in cone area but the highest in combined motor force, the apxx had the second lowest amount of cone area with the lowest motor force, and the sa12's had the highest amount of cone area with the second highest motor force. I believe that a combination of motor force and displacement will yield the best result.... however comparing the 3 sa12's to the 5 sa8's, the sa8's will have considerably more motor force but a lot less cone area, so 3 sa12's compared to 5 sa8's should be very very close in "loudness" if in the proper enclosure is used and the same amount of power is used on both setups... I think that cone area and motor force can be almost "traded off" if you will.... For example, a crazy custom 8 with a BL of 45 should be as loud as 2 twelves with a combined bl of 22.... please feel free to contribute and correct me if I am wrong. I realize that there are many factors that play in here but this is just a broad generalization.

I don't see you being able to do the 49.9 class with 5 8's....maybe in a crx or something
Gonna be hard in a truck
we'll see... all I can do is try right??? and if 5 8's fails to get me in the high 40's, then I have my apxx 18 on standby ready for 5k //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

I think for a daily set up cone area is king... But box will definitely come into play. Did a lil texting with the four 12 sealed set up i had, got 2 prefab boxes and metered them... Then the custom sealed boxes i had... Almost 7 or 8 db louder if i remember right...

All on the same amp.

like I said, Ill see what I can do... the one sa8 that Im running is hitting in the mid 30's goin all out on my best song... I know five with A LOT of port will get nasty, especially with a 33 hz tuning....

There's no replacement for displacement. You are looking for volume of air ejected. Generally speaking more cone area wins there all things being equal. More woofers/coils is key for long term powerr handling.

Well i think I will also buy 3 sa12's and do a comparison between the two setups, only different variable would be the box and amount of woofers, but the vehicle amp and electrical will remain the same, I will also make sure that the temperature and barometric pressure are equal as well

^^ not saying that you will be wrong bro... But I would like to see what the results will be, not just spl but sq as well... I know that cone area is a huge factor but what I am getting at is that it seems that some people think that it is the only factor... which is false.
