or:

Does the signal become distorted once volume levels on the HU rise. What about quality of the signal at max volume?

Some HU's output is clean up to max volume. Others will clip several clicks before maximum.

"Usually" except on really high end models and ones with optical outputs, 3/4 volume is max before distortion plays a major role. I can personally turn mine all the way up with no audible distortion. The higher the signal to noise ratio, the better. This is for amps as well.
