Is 6.25 vs. 6x9 just personal preference?

So I have the choice to run a 6x9 setup all around or just in front or just back and was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are of 6x9's or 6.25's.

What do 6x9's do that 6.25's dont and vise versa? This is a general question, I know. So the answer would be a general one as well, Im mainly trying to find out if and what the difference is between these two sizes.

Thanks!

everything i've read says that a 6x9 will distort quicker because if its irregular shape. YOu never see any top of the line component sets in 6x9's...they are always a circle. If you're running from the built in amp on your headunit to 6.5 OR 6x9 coaxials, then just get whatever fits for ease of install. They'll sound about the same.

However, once you start throwing 50+ watts from an external 2 or 4 channnel amp, you'll definitely want 6.5s.

If you can find some nice 6x9 components for the front, I would run those and take advantage of the cone size which will yield a lower crossover setting . I believe Image dynamics makes some real nice 6x9 components.

The benefit of the 22% increase in cone are can easily be displaced by a much higher quality 6.5".

The fact that 6x9's are not really manufactured by anybody other than retail providers (Read: Low quality) is the reason for 6x9's ******* ***.

If the speakers are going into a rear deck, I would use

6x9's. They are designed for large IB usually. I would

be carefull putting 6.5's back there. There are some

good 6x9's out there ID and Focal come to mind, but there

are others. Likewise, there may be some 6.5's that sound

good in large IB applications.

If there are 6x9 openings in a door or panel, I would go

6.5" instead 100% of the time.

6x9's on a budget system will sound way better IMO. More sound and way more bass (let alone they will go much lower) and in some cars if you mount them right the trunk/rear deck will act as a IB to them and they can seriously pound.

You can get some good 6x9's Like Hertz has a really awesome set and I love my Memphis M-Class 6x9's. I also got some cheap memphis PR's in my GF's Cavalier and it sounds like she has subs.

6x9's have more cone area and thus produce more sound. But the oval shape does weird things. Hence why all the really high end sets are not oval. 6.5's will have better SQ but on the budget side 6.5's coax's are not going to sound any better really. I would just get the 6x9's for more sound.

In my 2007 MGM right now I have some 6.5's in the front and my M-Class 6x9's in the back. I get the good sound of the 6.5's but the lower extension of my 6x9's for fill. It sounds aweseom IMO. And my 6x9's shake the whole car. I hear of people adding subs just to get that bit of vibration on there back... well I have that with my 6x9's. However once I do a better install (sound dedening... ect) and get a good high end set of 6.5's I will probably fade out the rears unless I have someone in the back seat.

if oval speakers aren't suppose to sound as good as round speakers, then I guess ribbons and planars won't sound as good as round tweets. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

The only reason 6x9's are made is because vehicle manufacturers put the hole there.

A detailed discussion in Car Audio magazine.

Car Audio started to grow and designers wanted a vehicle specific driver and its still going blah blah.
