Is 18" too big?

It's technically true..... but that's only a big problem if you need the 18" driver to cover too high a frequency.
As the cone is asked to move back and forth faster and faster at higher freq..... it will start to flex and ripple in a sense. To counter that....you need thicker, heavier, more rigid cones. So then the sensitivity gets terrible, you need more exotic materials and larger more $$ motors, etc.

There are happy mediums to be met. Don't ask too much of an 18" in higher frequencies..... let it have a heavier cone, but feed it plenty of power to over come the loss of sensitivity.
arent the bigger subs usually more sensative then the smaller ones?
