Is 18" too big?

i used to think that, until i heard one in a correctly designed and constructed box. i listen to alot of heavy metal and it sounded really good. hearing it also destroyed the notion that larger subs can't "keep up" with double bass metal.
Good to know, I was always under the impression that 15's and 18's would sound like shit with rock. Thats why ive always stuck with 10 and 12 inch. Maybe ill have to give something larger a try....

i have never had an 18 personally. the best one i've heard was in a suburban. very loud. i don't really like fosgate subs much, but that one was very loud.

All I listen to is metal/rock/blues, maybe the occasional old school hip hop and I'm going with two 18's for this next install of mine. Should be interesting.

Never hurts to try stuff out, you can always go by what others say or give it a shot yourself and get a feel for it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

cool. I'm not as interested in volume as much as moving some air. Dont get me wrong, I like it loud, but I just want to shake things up (so to speak) and sound good doing it.

typically if your loud your movin alot of air...spl=sound pressure (as in air pressure...) level.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I've only had 10's and 12's. Looking to try out 6.5's, 8s, 15s, and 18s eventually.

That is when my budget allows for it. **** hobbies //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

don't feel like the lone ranger....its amazing how fast shit can add up

I was talking to the guy at the local car audio shop. I asked him about getting an 18". He said he wouldn't advise it because the cone area is so large that it causes the cone to have a "ripple" effect and causes loss of SQ.
True or false???
You should of punched him in the face.

Dont be scarred... Who cares about what you listen to... Get off your nuts and spend the extra 30 bucks to get the next size bigger *IE the 18*

Dont blame it on what you listen to.. Grow some balls

my last sub was an AQHD315 off an BXI2006d It got loud and it got low, very low.

My new sub is an RE MT 18" with no amp yet... im anxious to hear what it will sound like.

I know it will definitely be alot louder, as for SQ, that will be more dependent on my box probably.

It's technically true..... but that's only a big problem if you need the 18" driver to cover too high a frequency.

As the cone is asked to move back and forth faster and faster at higher freq..... it will start to flex and ripple in a sense. To counter that....you need thicker, heavier, more rigid cones. So then the sensitivity gets terrible, you need more exotic materials and larger more $$ motors, etc.

There are happy mediums to be met. Don't ask too much of an 18" in higher frequencies..... let it have a heavier cone, but feed it plenty of power to over come the loss of sensitivity.
