Ipod Wiring...

Guys -

I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times, but what exactly do I need to WIRE an IPOD into my car stereos? I have an Alpine in the truck, and a Sony in the LandCruiser. I understand that I would need a mini to RCA adapter, but I have also heard that I may be able to hook up directly to the CD changer cable.

Also is there a way to charge up the IPOD while it's hooked up without using the cigarette lighter? Can I use a docking station instead?

I have hooked up stereos, but have not mesed with the RCA cables or changers, so I will need all the help available.

P.S. the FM transmitters ****... I've tried 3 so far.

THANKS!!!

First time Ive seen something posted about Ipod's since Ive been here.

I run an ipod in my truck. My eclipse had a seperate line in, just for an ipod or any other multimedia device like it. I bought the belkin car 'kit' which is a cigarette adapter, with a connection for the ipod, and a jack for the line out.

It works AWESOME. I absolutely love it. I just bought an extra cig lighter adapter from radio shack, and piggy backed it off my cig lighter that powers on and off with the truck. I use a cell phone holder from radio shack in the vent to hold the ipod..and it too works awesome. Here's a pic:

If your cd player has a hookup for a cd changer, they make a cable that converts it to line in I believe. My best advice is to poke around in this forum: Ipod Lounge

If you have any questions after looking around in that forum..I can help you out. I did a lot of research on this when I was putting my ipod in my truck. It's the best thing Ive done to it yet.

Looks SUPER clean... you say you are using the Belkin cig adapter, but I don't see it... are you hiding it under the dash??? Also, sweet IPOD holder... I am assuming this is from you old Eclipse? If not, I'd love to know where you got it.

Yes, I am hearing a lot that I can just hook into the Aux line or CD Changer line with some sort of connector. I guess it would depend on the stereo, as I know the Sony and Alpine have different connections. (I have both) I assume that in the near future, there will be an IPOD face for an Alpine reciever that wil be plug and play just like a face off reciever. I just can't wait that long! This would be a face that would also be used as a portable, and even plug into a home stereo reciever...

Any help in wiring out there would be great! I'll check out the IPOD Lounge site though. THANKS!

Glad you got it all figured out! It really is worth it to have the ipod in your car. I dont even use my cd player anymore. Id rather hook my ipod up to my computer, upload songs to it(1-2 mins usually), rather than wait for a cd to burn, make sure I have cd's to burn etc etc etc.

Its so simple. I only have a 10 gb ipod, but Im having a hard time filling it up. I only have 6.5 gb loaded on it, and I have a TON of songs.

Enjoy!

Btw..forgot to answer your question. Yes the cig lighter is behind the dash. It is piggybacked off the cig lighter you see in that pic I posted. The wire is run underneath the ac vent..so it's all hidden but the connector for the ipod.

I switched to a different cd player for the time being to play around with, (Panasonic CQ-DP975/DFX85EUC), and it has a set of "cd in" rca's meant for the cd changer. Now what id like to do is just run a rca to 3.5 y cable to my mp3 player which youd assume should work fine. Ive set this all up and I cant get the sound to play at all. I cant get it to come up at all.

My next project is to mod the ciggarette ashtray into a mini switch box and hardwirewire my 2 cell charges and 1 or 2 more chargers cables either to the underside of the ashtray or to an accessory. This way all wires are hidden, ive still got my cig lighter, (and roooom), and i can control what is on while keeping everything looking professional.

Any ideas xxxr or avs20?

stay away from any type of fm transmitter. since you have an alpine, you can get the aux input adapter. if your hu is versatile link ready, you can get the adapter. you can get it from crtuchfield for a good price. as for the power/connection, i too use the belkin car kit. as stated above, get a lighter socket from radio shack and connect a piggy it with your lighter. you can also use any other 12v source. the belkin car kit is by far the best one, it has a line out, charges your ipod, and is a clean install. as for my ipod holder, it's a cell phone holder from sprint. best of all it has a ball and socket joint so it can easily be rotated from driver to passenger, up and down.

Whats the max I should wire to the cig 12v source? I was looking at wiring up a radar detector, 1-2 phone, brakelight (showcar) switch aka (get off my *** switch), and leaving a slot for future wiring while also leaving my cigarette lighter available incase i need to use it or use it as a quick power source for another item. I plan on putting in a fabricated false plastic front inplace of my ashtray with switches wired in so i can turn on each as i need to use it instead of having it constantly drawing. This is the first time ive done this so im trying to find the best way to go about it.
