I am considering getting an ipod mini because, well it gets rid of the hassle of having so many cds in my truck. My h/u supprts ipod so thats not a problem. My only concern, and keep in mind I don't know much about kbs besides that higher is better quality, is if ipods retain cd sound quality? Any help is appreciated. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

While on the subject of MP3 sound Q.

I have burt my entire cd collection onto my computer using the freeware verson of Musicmatch. I was looking at the bit rate settings and noticed that 128 bit is "cd quality"

I used VBR at 100%. Am I just wasting space or is there enough of a differance in SQ to make it worth while?

I believe 320 kbps is CD quality. I make sure to download all my files at 192 or higher and I have not noticed a difference in quality whatsoever. But dont go below 128 or you will notice a difference.

Opinions being what they are, everyone's will be different on this as well. I used to accept 128 and 192kps as CD quality. Once I started listening with decent headphones through home audio gear, not my crappy PC stuff, I noticed a difference between 320k and 128, 192 stuff. I ONLY rip 320kps now and have gone back and re-encoded the older stuff.

I guess the senario would be to rip at the highest bitrate you have room for on your ipod. The how good vs how many. Driving down the road, you might really not hear the difference, rip the same song at 96, 192, and 320 and give it a go before you too deep at any bitrate.

So what does VBR do? Does it record at the highest possible quality for the sorce?
500th Post!! Look at me go
Its kilobites per second, so basically more memory is needed for the same thing, but more attention is used for the details, which are minimal. Use 192 to get the best mix between quality and space.

FYI

320kbps is NOT CD quality.

CD quality is 1411kbps.

If you rip your CD's in AIFF or WAV format, then you can retain the full quality. Otherwise.. your losing quite a bit. Be aware though, that those two types of files are at least 4 times the size of a standard MP3.

Im looking to get an ipod mini too. Cept I read they might be coming out with a new shuffle. 2GB, and it will have a screen. $150, then they will move the 1gig down to $99 and get rid of the 512. Still in the "research" phase though (or whatever businesses call it) so I dont think I can wait that long.

thank god someone stopped the misinformation in this thread.

and VBR = variable bitrate. http://www.fezguys.com/columns/057.shtml

i wish i could sell my practically new ipod mini but i was stupid enough to have it inscribed.
