You do know that when you use the 3.5mm headphone jack you're using the iPod's amp and you're distorting the output because, in effect, it's being amplified 2 times, once by the ipod, and then by the headunit. When you connect your ipod/iphone device straight to your headunit via a USB cable, the head unit is doing the Digital to Analog conversion and you have better audio quality?
Ive used my phone on my buddys deck via usb... Those same songs dont sound as good as in my car with 3.5 jack.. Tho my system is better tuned also.. :)

i really hope apple have some type of trading program for all the people who brought all those docking station/accessory etc. that was a bad idea changing that port now all the companies out there that support apple device got to switch up SMH

I think you can get some more noise from the usb low level line. I don't notice the noise with the 3.5mm

I'm not even sending low-level line over the USB, the MP3 file is essentially being read digitally by the headunit, and then converted on the headunit to play on the audio system (if I'm not mistaken?).

I can hear inteference from the usb... don't know if its from the cord or from the crappy iphone... lol

It all also depends on the chord you have. When I first got my Pioneer P4400BH, I got a crappy e-bay cable and I had interference too, and I couldn't do streaming video to the headunit.

Then I shelled out $70 for a genuine Pioneer iPod USB connector, and haven't had a single problem since...

I am using the cable that came packaged with my p99rs... might be my iphone its seen a few trips to the floor

USB vs. 3.5mm, in theory and on a smaller scale in practice, should be no contest. I'm no audio professor, but I do work with telecommunications every day, and I can say from experience that the longer you can keep a signal digital, the better that signal will stay true to it's original form. Once you convert that file to analog at the iPod to transmit over the 3.5mm, it starts to hit some degredation. I know I can notice a difference in USB vs. 3.5mm, in low vs. high bit rate MP3's, and in MP3's vs. a lossless signal or CD's. If you can't, why on earth would you continue to spend money to make your already dirty source try to sound better? I will continue to use digital, USB in this case. Yeah there's way more that comes into play here, but simply put, USB should always win in a contest vs. 3.5mm, except that 3.5mm you can plug into any device.

I just hope those lightning USB cables come out soon, and that these firmwares on the HU's all work with the new hardware/software.

i always hear this and hostley i cant hear that much of a diffrence between the headphone jack and dock conecter

I'm sure most of you have seen the new iPhone 5 and Apple's newest iTouch releases.
There's just one problem for all of us that use an ipod cable to connect to head units:

THIS UNIT HAS A LIGHTING PORT!!!!

Yes, that's right, as can be seen here:

iPhone - Buy iPhone 5 with Free Shipping - Apple Store (U.S.)

The port is different. This is something everyone with a headunit that uses an ipod cable are going to have to deal with. Just more $$$ for Apple via accessories everyone will be. I'm sure there will be bulky adapters, but I'm really not looking forward to how ugly that will make my interior.

Let's hear some thoughts on this!

Get a headunit with a USB port. Most nowadays have that instead of a dedicated iPhone cable.

My headunit does have a USB port, however my iphone serves as my hub of digital everything:

music

movies

pictures

GPS

address/phonebook/bluetooth calling

Pandora

And yes, you're completely right. Theory, and slightly in practice, USB wins over 3.5mm by default. USB allows the head unit to receieve the digital file, convert it to analog sound, and send it out through your speakers. On the other hand, the 3.5mm jack is converted from digital to analog by the ipod/iphone dac (which *****), and then it's amplified through the 3.5mm jack, and then amplified AGAIN through the head unit.

Before you remove the amp, swap the front RCAs with the rear ones on the amp and repeat the test. Many guys here use the Pioneer amps and love...
