alright, so i was thinking that i wanted to get a capacitor because my lights dim a little bit, and my amp is ******* a lot of power from the battery, so i was wondering if any of you know about capacitors,

can i have any good information on them, i was thinking about getting

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7194671&st=capacitor&type=product&id=1112808825256

...and was wondering if it is easy to install, i am assuming it is, but have never done one before, can someone tell me how to install it>?

Thanks for helping.

... you have 104 posts and you still have yet to learn a **** thing.

Prepare to get flamed for that...

If your lights are dimming

1. Do the big 3. See the sticky at the top of the wiring and electrical forum

2. Upgrade to a larger Battery under the hood Optima yellow top, kinetic, any sort

3. Upgrade to a high output alternator.

4. Lights dimming off 380watts?? Start with the big3 should help a lot.

x2

if u have a cap this is what u do with it
drive down the interstate

open door

throw it out
x2 lol for 200 bucks you could do alot more

If you are having dimming issues, then I guarentee you are clipping the amplifier causing it to draw large spikes or current.

Turn the gain down, I'm sure you have it cranked, and the bass boost off. If you feel like doing something right, maybe set your gain properly by following the gain setting tutorial in the sticky at the top of the amplifier section.

$200 cap?!?

there's 50 and 100 farad caps on ebay for that.....

and for half of that, you could do your big 3, and rewire your entire install in 1/0 ga.

caps DO serve a purpose, but there's no way you need one for that kind of power

you also have much to learn.
You can teach me. Go for it, tell me what I am missing. the only positive I know of is the energy store of a cap for sudden voltage pulls. Other than that, it is just another drain on your elec system. Teach me please.

Regardless of how much power he is running, a capacitor will not help, or at least will not stop his dimming problems. A capacitor is a marketing gimmick, a second battery or even upgrading the current battery is MUCH more effective for stabalizing your voltage. The only way a capacitor works properly is when they are used properly, like the ones you would find inside an amplifier or other electrical device...

Its ok, it makes him feel superior.

He's been doing it all day long and it's making me mad:mad:

Yeah, thats not the first time I have seen him post that.

A capacitor's intended use is to absorb sudden spikes in ampere demand from your system, and supply the power to your amplifier during those quick spikes, and show your charging system a constant draw, rather than a constantly fluctuating one.

This isn't important with a component amplifier, so much, since you're more or less constantly drawing the same amount of electricity, but it's beneficial for a subwoofer amplifier which may be drawing 0 ampere's one moment, and 200+ the next. Rather than showing your alternator these sudden spikes, it will supply the huge bursts of power for those short periods of time, and show your alternator a constant demand for electricity over time.

So rather than showing your alt. 0 amps of draw one moment, and 200 the next, it will show it (random number here) say, 100A constantly.

That's the correct useage of a capacitor. And it DOES work for this. The trick is, your alternator still needs to be capable of recharging the cap fast enough that it never entirely discharges, otherwise the cap will be doing no good, PLUS it will be over and above those spikes from your amp.

So you're correct in saying that a capacitor will not help if your charging system is already inadequate, but very incorrect in saying that a capacitor has no function. It just so happens that most people are misinformed about what a capacitor is actually used for.

now you know. and don't be an ***.

I believe I covered that.

Check the whole *** thing, we were all good till you chimed in.
