Installed new stereo and now new or old stereo won't work

Installed JVC KD-G441 into a vw lupo to replace another after market stereo. The unit powers up for about a second then dies. So tried old stereo and that won't do nothing. Frustrated isn't the word. I appreciate any help. Thanks
