Installed new Head Unit and no sound?

The stereo in my brothers 95 neon was shot, when you turned it up past about 1/4 volume the speakers would just fuzz out no music so I put a new head unit in today went over my wiring many time even tried a dif head unit and same thing.. When I put up a simple speaker to the rca output that even plays so i know its not on mute or anything.. If one speaker was shorted or something would they all not work? I am really clueless right.. I plan on putting in new speakers also but dont want to inless I know itll work....?

Yes. If one speaker wire is shorted, it will shut down the head unit's internal amplifier and no speakers will play.

If that one speaker is disconnected from the head unit will it play w/o that speaker so I can see which one it is? Any tips for putiting in new speaker wire?
