The hourly rate in America for any service is between $65 to $105 an hour, so if I needed a plumber I would pay $85 an hour.

I shoudve learned 'any service' then, $65 x 40hrs/week is $2600/wk and ~130k/yr. Like I said, wheres your pHD. And you wonder why people hire Mexican day labor.

If you let some kid install your stuff...and a week later your car burns down, who is responsible? Think the shade tree installer is going to buy you a new car?

Shops are there to make money, not to be a charity institution.

You bring some used stuff into the shop and we have to test it out to make sure it works...which is usually a 15 dollar fee per piece of equipment. Then there is no warranty on any of the install that is attached to the used equipment.

Good work cost money, you call our heating and air business to go put a unit in...we charge more then most people around here because you get a better quality of work.

Its the exact same thing as buying a better woofer...a lot of you guys pay 300+ for a sub, why? a 50 dollar sub will give you bass too, its the exact same argument you guys are using. You pay for quality...period

Who pays the insurance? Who pays the electric and phone bill? Who paid for the tools? Who paid to hire the air conditioner technetican to come and fix the AC? Who pay the tax man? Do you have any idea how much you have to pay the gov't in taxes for every hour an employee works?

Do you think all that crap is free? Some one spends big money to set up shop or run a plumbing service and you think all the stuff around it is free and the service employee just pockets the hourly rate like your paying an employee?

Go and start your own business and see how much money you have to make to before you get to put one dime in your pocket as "salary" or "profit".

If your shop is making less than $130k per year your bankrupt and won't last another year. $130k per year for a store front business won't keep the lights and phone turned on. $130K per year is chicken shit.

For a doctor to take home $130 K per year, that means his practice is pulling in at least $350 - $500 k per year, and most of it goes to costs, and he's lucky to take home $130 k, and still owes $500k for medical school.

this thread was very interesting.

I must admit that some of you had very valid points, i myself understand that 1k for that work is probably a bit much, i also know that shops love to **** you any chance they get, i have a bimmer and i always call and get a ballpark range and the first question out of their mouth even when its a quote for equipment is for what type of car, at first i used to ask them what for, its a headunit, not install im asking about.

then later i realized they were sizing me up so i alwasy call and get a quote and when they ask what type of car i say honda, then when i visit the shop and they quadrouple the price aftering seeing is a bimmer ill tell them i spoke to someone last month and they said it would be this much.

all in all, dealers and shops are like hustlers, i have had my car rewired 2 times because shops did shit for jobs. i realized i could do a cleaner job so i learned to do this and now im finishing up my install. Its a cleaner install, wires are cut and insulated, proper fuses, proper grounding, heatshrink , proper connectors.

All in all DIY, this forum is a wealth of information, you will learn so much! it might take you a while but you will learn how to do the install and beleive me , if you buy all the proper install components and draw schematics and plans accordingly, you will make it all work and you will be very happy you did it yourself
