Innovative Battery Monitor by EA

Well I was just talking to Nate (email) and he shot me info on a new battery monitor that he has for sale. It is cool in the sense that it will shut your amps off if the voltage goes to high or to low, so prior to burning up your $700 amp the monitor will trigger a shut down before it sees 10 volts.

I have just ordered one to try it out, I will report once I give it a good trial

You know, these aren't exactly hard to make if you know a decent amount of DC electronics. All it is basically is a voltage sensing relay. Just sayn'

...unless it is fairly cheap I see no reason why to buy one if you can make your own.

Plus ive seen quite a number of crispy EA alternators, maybe he should work on that first.

Well I don't know about others, but it isn't within my bag of tricks to make one, plus I can only imagine what it would look like being home made. Maybe since you can make one for pretty cheap, you could do so and keep track of the time you spend on it and cost then you could report back what it took in to actually make one.

As for his alts, I have had over 10 installed in clients cars in the last 8 months and not had a single issue. I will say that I did have one go south last year, and Nate promplty fixed it and shipped it back at his expense.

Looks like a pretty neat device.
I just watch my voltmeter. I think what would make this more marketable is adjustable cut off voltages.
the set points can be pre set for your situation. for example I have mine coming to cut off at 11v then turn back on at 11.5 on the low side, then switch out at 19v and back on at 18.5 on the high side.

The set points does put this in a different class. Agreed, if it had a vm display, and was configured to mount in the dash, I think it would become a 'must buy'. Especially if the vm was really high quality, with a great display. Thanks for the clarification!

Well I will definately pass this info on to Nate, maybe it can be a future revision or a higher model for future production.

Personally for daily/non competition use I would rather simply know my stuff is protected. I would gamble to say that if you knew your stuff was protected you would not keep such a close eye on the VM, and probably wouldn't care what 10th of a volt you are at, and possibly what volt as long as you are playing loud and not gonna roast your amps. 0.02

I run my system a LOT while camping in the desert, sometimes in one spot for days. The vm is absolutely critical for me to monitor my system with the engine off. That is why one of these would be PERFECT for my application, for general use, as well as for amps. Color me intrigued. I would think that the market would be vastly bigger if marketed to the rv/car camp crowd. As in 1000 times the possible end consumer.
