It's called a DMM or digital multimeter. It's a testing tool that will allow you to test for DC voltage, ohms, short circuits, and polarity. It has many other functions, but those will be the ones you use the most frequently in this hobby. Mine is a little pricey, but they come in all price ranges (starting at about $10).

If you're a newb, you'll just have to trust that this toll will save you mountains of time and possible equipment failures.

I have 4. Does that count? I had 5, but that one got ran over by a forklift. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Plus one on getting one if you really wanna pick up this hobby.

for experts on here..you should try to explain to the ppl out there that dont know how to use one..like explain what mode to put it on to check for ohms, and volts and polarity..I would do so but mine isnt at my house at the moment..i got mine (a bluepoint) when I went into the UTI program..been using it every since..

eh. I haven't touched mine in forever. IMO, it's not really needed. I only use it to test the VCs and not for gain setting... I have my ears for that.
