Hi Everyone,

I am an amateur in car audio and wanted to get some ideas from everyone.

I have a Porsche Cayman S with the Bose stereo that has as subwoofer in the footwell.

I have read little bits here and there that this is a hard car to do anything to without gutting the Bose first (something about th MOST bus??). My interests are Navi, car-pc possibly, high-quality sound etc.

Any ideas on where to start?

Cheers!

I'd like to take a crack at this myself.

Budget is yet to be determined. I could say 10k but what does that get me compared to 5k? I want to leave options open.

Goals: Navigation, multi-format audio, excellent sound quality, perhaps in-car PC.

If your an audio noob you honestly stand no chance against that car. That is one of the most difficult cars i have had to work on, with no installation experience i think you will be in a world of hurt.

Edit: i see you said cayman, its early i thought u said cayenne but i still think you might wanna let someone whos worked on car before work on it..

Well, you have a multitude of options.

As far as all-in-one type source unit... I'd look into the Kenwood double dins. They have a full feature set, navigation, bluetooth, etc, etc...

CarPC, do you want all-in-one or piece together?

As for speakers and amplification, you have lots of options too. You can get a high end component set, or piece together your own and run an active crossover network where you can change the xover and tune yourself.

You'll also want to look into wiring, tools/materials, deadening (I recommend http://www.secondskinaudio.com)

Where on the east coast are you.

Pics of car + user name? ^^

In-car PC will run you about a grand, or as high as two, depending on the quality of the PC. You'll need to figure out where to built the PC into. Easiest route is to go with laptop parts, as the power supplies for those are intended to run off of 12vdc power.

Navigation would probably go hand in hand with the head unit. Can't comment on that, I'm not the most informed person on what to go with there - however, Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse, those are good brands to look for.

Multi-format audio also goes with the HU - any good one will play most formats.

Sound quality is where the big portion of the money goes. Once you locate a good HU, you can look at what you want to do here. I'm wondering if the car is possibly sound deadened in any way possible - if not, that will be a consideration. Good speakers to look at are Rainbow comp sets, Focal, Image Dynamics, those are great sets of speakers. Possibly some ID Horns, if you wanted to go that route. Subwoofer would be determined by what you want - are you willing to sacrifice trunk space, or are you wanting to just swap out the current sub? If the former, your options are more open, but like I said, you'll lose the trunk space, with the second we would need to know enclosure size.

Amps to power those, I would look into Sundown amps, Zapco, a few brands like those. Several options available there, it will depend on how much power you want to run to the speakers.

And, this car might be a bit difficult to work on, as mentioned. It would be good to locate someone with hands-on experience, as you don't want to ruin any parts of it.

This is what I would love to find out more about. What is it that makes the car that difficult? I enjoy the technical stuff so fire away.

Super, thanks for throwing out some quality names for me to start researching.

I honestly don't think I would even bother with a system in that car. Just turn the radio off and listen to that engine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

Oh I do turn it off and listen to that glorious sound directly behind my seat (mid-engine) and it brings tears to my eyes how awesome it sounds. But, I do like to hear good music when going on long drives down the highway.
