I wanna start taking ju-jitzu

it seems like a few of u guys here had some exceptional training. i'm not looking to become the next Chuck Norris...I just wanna be able to kick every punk's *** that tries to pick a fight with me (of course unless that punk is a professional fighter, just waaayyyy bigger than me or maybe studied at the Shaolin Kempo).
I definitely had an exceptional trainer, but I'm no martial artist. I got out of it when I was about 11 because my new trainers sucked balls and I was getting into other things. My first sensei was Andy Sanano. He's been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and I believe he's even invented his own form of martial arts. I learned a lot with him.

Make sure you find a class that REALLY lets you spar. I got to do that with Sanano, but at the new school here we weren't allowed to hit at all.

Just so everyone knows people like Chuck Norris and Sean Claude Van Dame are jokes in the martial arts world. They have decent form on some kicks but mostly it is just the cameras making everything look good. Neither of those guys have won anything real. Chuck Norris has never even been in a contact tournament, the only thing he has ever got a belt in was no contact middle-weight. For any of you that have competed like myself, you know how ridicolous no contact sparing is. Seriously you could throw a punch and miss by a foot and they give you a point for "control".

Hmm comparing Brazilian Grappling to Japanesse Martial Arts. Kinda hard to compare isnt it? In all honesty though have you been in a street fight that ended with a spinning crescent kick? I havent either but I have ended a fight on the ground.
x2

I want to say you're wrong about Chuck Norris, but IDR. And where do you train up here in Wisconsin? I hated the studio I went to down in Baraboo. I'd be willing to drive a little ways to train under a real instructor.

Chuck norris is a bad ***. I know there is a lot of jokes about him but he does have a black belt under the machados for BJJ.

well, i just got back from my first self-defense class. what a major disappointment. before coming, i was told these classes were semi-intense. i made my mind 10 minutes in that i wasnt coming back.

the class consisted of two overweight instructors (a woman and a man), a couple of odd looking hippie/burn-out types, two older women and a dumb-a$$ middle schooler. i did learn a few things tho but its absolutely not what i'm looking for. i'm trying to hit and get hit. i'm gonna start looking for boxing lessons.

Self defense classes at the Y are not martial arts. Find a real studio and you won't be disappointed

lol. anyways, i found two more places. one is all mma training...3 nights a week but not sure how much. the other is private lessons from a former pro boxer, Ed Sauerhoff...$30/hour. i spoke to him on the phone and it sounds very intriquing but dont think i can afford it. i know you're not a boxer, but have u by any chance heard of him?
