I think i may need a new box..

Ok , i have a 95 Talon which is a hatchback car. I have a 12" Type R in a prefab ported box, which i think is my problem. Im powering it with an alpine mrp-500 @2ohms, so it should be getting around 500watts. It seems no matter whenever i turn up for about 20secs , the sub is just starting to smell , like the voice coils are heating up. Gains are all set properly and wiring is right. Could my prefab box be hurting my setup this bad ? If so what are your ideas if you were in my position?

Also everything is almost brand new,along with the new alpine deck i got in the car.

How are the gains set, what HU do you have(more importantly, RCA voltage), and at which volume is the HU turned to when you start smelling the sub?

Headunit is a Alpine CDE-102. I adjust the gain and settings by ear. Turn the headunit up to 25 and you start smelling the sub.

sub up port up will sound better in there and yes a custom built box will sound better also and a prefab it is probably tuned 40-45hz most are anyways...or higher

prefab ftl. take the time and build a good ported and you will be very pleased.

The box has absolutely no effect on the coils. If the coils smell you are sending too much power to the sub, regardless of the enclosure. Try setting your gains with a DMM. The only other thing I can think of is if the subs new you might just be smelling the excess glue being burned off, but that shouldn't last for more than a few quick play sessions.

You're just clipping the amp's output on some songs. Turn it down a bit and build yourself a 2.5cuft box tuned to 34hz.

On low notes pretty much. (Jeezy,gucci,lil jon) It seems as it hits the highs hard, but has no-weak low end. But then again im only pushing 500watts so i cant expect much. But for my little car this setup should rock, so im leaning towards the box.

Well if the box is too small and not tuned properly, the sub is basically relying on its coils for suspension which would cause them to heat up and make the smell. Just wanted another opinion.

clipping and/or playing below tuning. Build another box tuned lower or raise the SSF on your amp...
