Sounds like your box. When you have a leak and the bass hits it will make all kinds of noises where the air is rushing through it. You cant get a hold of another box to try it. Take the sub out play it freeair see what it does. The sub sound like it is good, you said there is no scratching when you push it in the center of the cone correct.

You will feel it also, it will feel stiff, it wont have flex to it.
