i gotz me some efficient powerz!!

i believe a PSU and a case are two areas where you shouldnt skimp and would be best served buying quality parts. A case/PSU will outlast many mobo/cpu combos. Did i really need a PSU quite this nice or powerful? Probably not, but i felt the 7 year warranty and substantial potential for upgrading made this PSU worth what i paid for it. Who knows, maybe i'll feel like a sli or xfire setup at some time. Plus it makes me feel like i have a big epeen.
Yeah, that's true, you do have a lot of headroom. I didn't skimp on my psu though, Antec makes decent stuff and like I said it's been running strong for 2 years now, never given me a bit of trouble. I built it my freshman year in college though so money was definitely a factor (which it sounds like it's not for you).

no we can discuss the toaster oven if you like. Gotta say it's by far the best toaster oven eva.

Actually it is. I'm running an 8800GTX with an overclocked cpu and 7 case fans all off a 420w psu. Been running for 2 years now with no problem. Without multiple graphics cards I just don't see the point in having a psu that large...I guess headroom?
Things have changed a bit since the 8800's came out, granted they were power hogs at the time.

case fans really dont draw much power, hard drives, ODD's, and processors are where the draw comes from

Had a client that had a nice build, 18gb(3x4gb and 3x2gb), 4 HD's, overclocked quad core and upgraded his built from a 4890 to a 5970 dual gpu card, hit the limit on his 750w psu

That and headroom is nice //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Well I'm running an overclocked dual core with 3 harddrives & 8gb of RAM. I dunno, just seems like my 420w supply has way more power than what I'm using...

A nice feature, but I don't know about any of your setups but the PSU is the quietest piece in my computer. The case fans and CPU cooler are definitely louder, like I said, I never even hear my PSU fan...Any my psu cost me like $40 :p
I'll agree with ya here, most PSU's are pretty quiet, especially compared to the heatsink. Granted getting a good case tends to make a difference in the noise you actually hear, again some clients i've done computers for have had some insane setups with aftermarket heatsinks and still ran quiet as a peep

I used to always run Antec PSU in the past, and i have been able to hear them depending on what else is happening. They make some nice PSUs, dont get me wrong, but i just felt the extra couple of bucks this corsair cost me was worth it compared to a fully modular Antec in the same league.

I will grant you that a PSU is certainly not the noisiest part of a system when compared the HSF and the vid card. i'd like to use something like the thermalright silver arrow or the Noctua NH-D14 for a HSF (think giant hunk of metal with low rpm fans) which should be pretty quiet. The cases i'm looking at all pretty much come with some decent fans which move air at lower rpms.

Admittedly i havent really focused on building quiet-ish computers before, so this is a big experiment. Previously i always went with loud and cool for OC.

What do you think of this case

ever seen one in RL?

Its not so much the quantity of ram you have moreas the quantity of sticks, running 4x2gb or 2x4gb? Overclocked dual cores probably take 70w max, whereas an I7 is rated to take ~130 stock, HD's general rule is 25w each, usually maxes out at 30w at startup and then avg power draw is around 10w

SSD's are the way to go //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif 1-5w

I will say though a good 450-500w PSU is better than a pos offbrand 850w PSU(not the case here, he got a good one)

Antec does make some good PSU's as well, they take a load

4x2gb. I don't recall exactly what CPU I'm running, I think it's an E7200 or something like that. I just know it was stock at 2.5-2.7ghz and it's overclocked to 3.5ghz right now.

Nope, if you're getting a full-tower my recommendation is the antec or coolermaster

Cooler Master HAF 932 Full Tower Black Case at TigerDirect.com

a little pricey but a solid case, used it with a couple builds

Most cases are pretty good nowadays though as long as you dont cheap out too much lol

that toaster oven does look pretty ****** too i must say lol

man im gonna break down and do a new build for myself in the next month or two, will delay my car project a bit but its needed, my asus board is on its last stretch ;\

built it like 6 years ago, core 2 duo, 4gb ram, 7900gtx, 4 hard drives lol

ya i like the feature set on the CM, but i dont want that fugly thing sitting in my living room lol

The turned mobo (with I/O port on top) on the silverstone is interesting. I also like the idea of having 3 180mm fans at the bottom... not sure about the whole positive air pressure thing though.. it might all just be gimmicky

The toaster oven is teh ****! It's like a tiny oven on the counter that heats up quick and bakes evenly!

I'm sort of stuck waiting for the next best thing to come out with my build. The Corsair case isn't out yet, but i think i like it better than the silverstone. I'm also waiting for the the C300 ssd drive i want to either hit the $200 mark or the g3 drives to start shipping. Then there is the whole sandy bridge hold up.. with all that and the likelihood that the 6 series Radeon and GTX 5 series cards will probably be cheaper by the time i get the rest in hand has frozen me out of buying much.

Ya like i told ya before i'm trying to hold off until the new socket comes out this year until I build anything, even if I don't get that socket it'll drive everything else down

funny i have this measily core 2 duo and built these **** beastly builds for customers
