It's not the clipped signal itself, but the byproduct (heat) that is associated with said clipping.Clipping, in itself, does not blow subs. a fully clipped signal, basically a square wave, sent from a 100w amp will not overheat a 500w capable sub. The sub will happily fart along all day. Now clip the signal from a higher output amplifier, and the sub will overheat. The problem is overpowering, not clipping.
