I don't think my sub/amp combo is very good :-(

So I finally decided to put a sub in my 04 civic coupe and didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on a sub since I already had an amp. So I found a JL 12w6v2 in a box for $50 on craigslist. Went and picked it up. Its in a pretty beat up ported box. So I'm pretty sure I wired it correctly to 2ohm. My amp is a Kenwood KAC-8104d amp that is 500 @ 2ohm. But its not really loud. Its nice clean bass when you turn volume 1/3 of the way up. But is not what I expected for a w6.

Any idea on what I possibly have done wrong?

I'm going to pick up a JL 500/1 later, just don't have the funds available at the moment.

I love the way the sq is but I don't always have my stereo up that loud. If its under say 15 for volume, I can't hear the sub. But The box its in is over 2cu/ft. But I'm looking at boxes right now. Should I go ported or sealed?

The 12W6 can be louder than a 12W7 output wise. The 12W7 can move more air though. It sounds like the woofer is in the wrong box. You said that it is beat up? Is the box leaking air anywhere?

The terminal for plugging seems like crap and is more than likely not sealed properly. So we can blame this on the box. That's probably why he sold it to me so cheap. Alright thanks guys I'll do some searching into the proper box this thing needs.

Just looked at the pdf file on jl's site, the box I have is a close in size and port as in the manual.

The box I have is 24x16x14 and JL reccommends 26.25x14x13

hmmm

a w6 will never be able to be louder than a w7, both in proper enclosures. I had my w6 in 2.0cu/ft tuned to 30hz and it could not handle much power, that's why i say a smaller enlcosure. A properly sealed enclosure is a must, even if it is ported.

Go With ported, it will make a world of difference! Also those subs really dont get too loud i had a 15' fed it 300w and it really didnt impress me then again it was in a sealed enclosure

What 15" JL audio?

I was very impressed with the w6v2 and would like to own another one.

I hear nothing but good things about w6 as per SQ wise and for the price I got it I could pass it up. I have run 2 12w3d4 in a HO JL box with a mono alpine run to them and it was **** loud for what it was. So I want to try this w6 and hope it works, if not, I'll sell it and get a w3 that I'm used to.
