i have created an abs plastic item that i would like to manufacture and distribute thru my shop and possibly thu other shops as well in the future.

i cant really tell you what it is. i would call it a bracket that i do not belive have been designed yet by anyone.

and it might be usefull in cutting down the install time and need for many different brackets in stock...

but the problem is i dont really know how to turn that into life.

i know its not cheap but im willing to try it as i have alot more designs in my pocket than just single part depending on how well that goes.

and also what would i do to protect myself from big companies like metra scosche etc that will no doubt try to interfere with my business if it goes anywhere...

from my readings it seems that if there is a small company that has invented something great it usually driven to bancrupcy by bigger corporations and in the end is bought out by that big corporation.

The manufacturing industry is pretty rough. I come from a mechanical engineering background with some manufacturing experience. Although you can get an idea patented, it may not help you very much. There are many companies that have specialized engineers and lawyers to re-design and steal ideas and/or patents. All they have to do is to find a loop hole or a marginal difference and re-patent as their own. A patent is a two bladed butcher knife that may potentially be hurtful to your business. Let's talk about the negativity. Publication of your patent will automatically expose the entire world to look into your idea. China will have the fastest way to duplicate your idea and/or product especially if you're going to have it manufactured overseas and selling your products elsewhere not protected by the laws of patents. Other bad things: There are major corps with unlimited funds that will try to screw with you by copying your exact product even though they're in direct violations of the patent that you hold. They have big time lawyers that will battle it out with you in court to delay and waste your time. If you're a small timer, your pockets will be depleted shortly. Chances are, you'll be forced to go into mediation and accept the loss. In car audio industry, many companies such as DD, etc, don't even bother with patents anymore because of similar reasons. Patent laws are expensive and require a large amount of upfront costs.

If you really want to pursue it, I'll help point you in the right directions with the procedures, etc. You don't need to give your ideas to me.

yea i remember few computer small companies like aureal audio-got owned by creative.

tripath amplifiers company got owned by one of the big dogs.

and few others.

so whats the best way then?

can a patent include as many variations of it as possible so when someone try to redesign it it would still fall under patent owned by me?

is there anything that i have to back me up as a inventor?
