You do know that this is the same force that Christians used to spread Christianity, right?
Religion and God are two different arguments. Religion, obviously, is completely archaic and irrational. God, while seemingly improbable, could exist, though.
He just may not be the guy you read about in the bible. Or perhaps all the different literature is about the same being. Or maybe its a bunch of beings. Or maybe its not a being at all. Maybe its just a big pie. Maybe it is not an it.

I say we all re-adopt the ancient Greek gods. That way we can at least believe in gods that got lots of poon.

Plus, having different aspects of the universe controlled by different beings seems more natural to me. And there is a lot more backstory to the gods' existence in Greek mythology.

Methinks you forget about the Crusades. If that wasn't spreading religion by force, I don't know what is. Now, they just manipulate third world people to join the church by giving them food and clothing.
The only "proof" you have that god exists is the Bible, a book which has been proven wrong on many points. I am not saying that god or some higher power doesn't exist, I am saying that nobody can prove it. You don't KNOW god exists. You don't KNOW Christ exists. You BELIEVE, you have FAITH in their existence. Knowledge and belief are two different things.

If belief in a higher power makes you feel good, gives you hope, gives you perspective, gives you an idea of where you belong in this gigantic universe, then by all means keep believing. Some people, like myself, would rather believe in what we see. I think that something else is out there. There are times when I have felt like I was connected to something larger. But I don't KNOW what that was, and I am not about to take the word of a bunch of ignorant people that wrote different parts of a book millenia before I was born. If God does exist, I don't think he would want us to just accept somebody else's word on such a big subject. If there is some grand design, I have to think that humanity's inquisitive nature and ability to reason are part of it. Why would a god make give us logic and reason and a constant thirst for knowledge if he meant us to disregard it and believe in a bunch of old fairy tales?

I know it was just a comedy movie, but I think Chris Rock in Dogma had a very good point. Beliefs are dangerous. They leave no room for new knowledge and flexibility. It's much better to have ideas about things. Ideas can change, they can adapt. Nobody knows anything until he sees the proof with his own eyes.

One of the ideas I try to espouse came from Indian Larry. Always keep asking the big questions, even if you know you'll never find the answers.
1.) so is having no beliefs. so are ideas

2.) so can beliefs

3.) even with that, alotta times u don't get the whole picture

4.) tell larry thats good piece of living

Beliefs can change just like ideas or knowledge can change. I would argue that there isn't necessarily a difference between beliefs and knowledge. A belief is when we believe we have captured reality in our thoughts. The key is that there are justified beliefs and unjustified beliefs. So i think you need to amend your statement that "beliefs are dangerous" to "beliefs have consequences." I do agree with you on most points, i just think your playing games with words here. The bottom line is intellectual honesty; not claiming to know things that you do not know. Our certainties about the world should scale with our evidence.
