How to get more punch out of 2 Type R 10's

Hey guys,

I've had this current setup in my Mitsubishi Lancer for about year now:

Alpine CDA-9884

Alpine Type S 6 1/2" components up front

Kenwood KAC-9104D sub amp (900W @ 2ohm)

2 Alpine Type R 10's

Sealed enclosure

In a few weeks I'm going to be replacing the stock rear speakers with 6 1/2" Type S 2-ways and adding an Infinity 4 channel amp.

I listen almost exclusively to hard rock/heavy metal (Metallica, AC/DC, Disturbed, Manowar) and I'd like to get some more punch out of the subs. I want to be able to feel kick drums hit me in the chest like you feel at a concert (I know I'm not going to get quite concert level.. but you know what I mean).

I originally went with the sealed enclosure for the tightness/accuracy/all that stuff that the internet tells you, but as I started to read some forums I found that a lot of people go with ported boxes for the kind of music I listen to.

So... for what I want to do, should I go with a ported enclosure? If so, what tuning frequency do you recommend? Or what about using the same box with a more powerful sub amp? How about a transducer?

Thanks for any input.

While I'm sure there are a lot of variables that play into that and differences between individual units, that is rather depressing.

Either way, to achieve this punch in the chest feeling that I want, should I start with a more powerful amplifier (recommendations? Kenwood Excelon X1200M?) or start by getting a ported enclosure?

I would recommend going for a larger ported enclosure first. I would think that 2.5 to 3 cubic feet tuned to 34 Hz would be GREAT for your Type R 10s.

I have noticed night and day differences between running the same subwoofers sealed versus running them ported in the same vehicle. I'd also venture to say that your amplifier would be adequate with the appropriate enclosure.

Regardless, I still say you should go with the ported enclosure first then look towards replacing your amp if you feel that you need more power.

Actually, that box doesn't fit the way I'd need it to, so I'm probably going to go with a custom ported enclosure.

May I ask how you guys came up with the 34 Hz number? I've received recommendations for everything between 32 and 44 Hz, with most of them being around 34. I'd just like to know where this number comes from.

Eh, the subs are rated at 500W RMS each. I could see maybe 1200W, but 1800? At 900W each, that's almost twice what they're rated.
