I am still 17 but in a few months i will reach 18. I am of course really interested and gaining much knowledge of car audio and would love to do this as a part time job. I was wondering what do they ask and what do you need to know to get hired in Tweeter, Circuit City, Best Buy, Good Guys, etc. People randomly were telling me that you get paid pretty good being an audio installer. How much is the usual pay?

Where I work, the question they ask is if you know a) what a reverse polarity relay is, and b) if you know how to wire one. At best buy and circuit city I would guess that the important part would be having experience, and being MECP certified.

^^^ take a trip down to vista, should be a couple miles from you and attend the snake pit and get youre mecp.

hell yeah bro. i been reading and suscribed to the snake pit and they seem to be great.

How much is it usually for an installer to get paid? through hourly and/or salary wise?

CC is $9.75/hr, BB is $12.00/hr if certified and $11/he i think without.....Other car sudio shops pay on commission i think i know i get paid a base plus commision which varies on the amout of work i do, that is all

on the mecp thing, not exactly "nessasary"... best buy and circuit train u, I would say start learning stuff now... heres a good site to learn some stuff...

ohms law, wiring relays... basic stuff...

it has books u can get from basic retail stores... I say try there and see how it goes...

look on the left hand side of the page where it says basics... click through those thigns and learn them

CC doesn't require that you get certification. Most shops won't really care- you can get certified but not know how to build a simple enclosure. Most custom shops want a good amount of experience, the ability to do alarm/remote starts in basic cars, things like that.

Apply to BB and CC and see if you can get yourself an interview. Even if you start out as sales, it's still a step in the right direction.

What is this mecp yous are talking about? I would also like to persue a job at one of these places, as a mechanic doesnt really pay that great...
Car audio doesnt pay that great, you deffinatly cant make a living off of it unless you own a shop. Being a a certified mechanic at say a MB or BMW dealer pays way way better (tripple digits usualy).
