how to break in a sub, using home theater?

well i know people have done free-air break ins before, and i was curious to how it was done. some people say to break it in, while others say not to, and i want to know how its done.

Well, in order for you to hook it upto your HT system, you're going to need a free amplifier channel to drive it. I don't know that I'd recommend trying to run it off of a channel of a receiver if that's what you have, because you aren't going to have much juice available.

If you are using an external amplifier, then just hook it up and just keep the excursion within reason.

what are home receivers rated at? home speakers are 8 ohms aren't they? so would a home receiver be able to handle a smaller load than that?
Some can. i know the new Onkyo reciever I just bought can handle 6 ohm but I'm not sure you should go much lower than that.

The problem I see is that they only put out very minimal amounts of power as compared to a car amp. And then theres the crossovers. If you use a regular ht amp channel it puts out the full range of frequencies. So unless you have a power inverter and car amp that you can hook up to the subwoofer preout on the amp I wouldnt recommend it.

If you are going to want to break it in just play it in the car for about a week and just take it easy on it.
