How the **** did I blow my sub?

this is the disassembled SX12 btw.

see, same glue. even on top of the screws.

now look at the alignment of the plate and the gap, compare it with yours. your top plate is out of place and with the magnetic force holding the top plate that is why it's not shifting any.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif that is not gorilla glue. that is the glue they use on those speakers.when i dis assembled an SX 12 i had a long time ago it had the same glue, but as for the screws, they are givin a layer of glue above them so the screws do not come loose. you have to scrape the glue off to access the screws.

i have a 6 spoke basket from an early 04 XXX 18. it has the exact same glue around the top and spider area. i'll give you pics tomorrow after work.

your basket did not shift, why? look at the 2 other screw holes for the basket. they still align up to the mounting area. if the basket would have shifted, you wouldn't see those holes...

what it looks like is the top plate glue has come loose and shifted. i can clearly see the magnet in the gap, that means the bottom plate and all the magnets are still aligned. it's the top plate that shifted taking the basket with it.
//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif I believe you are correct. There very well may be bolts underneath that glue and looks like the top plate did shift. I apologize for accusing the guy I got the sub for selling me a faulty sub, I jumped to a conclusion when I should not have. With all the SPL guys at the State Finals you think someone would've known what happened or how to help.

Now, how do I go about lining the top plate back up with the motor? And do I use glue to hold it back on there?

Well, I pulled the basket off the motor, and the top plate came with it. So the top plate is bolted in to the basket. The tough part will be trying to get the top plate lined up on the ferrite slugs. Should I just throw some CA glue on the top plate to get it to stay on the slugs?

I guess the glue holding the top plate to the slugs more or less melted (lost its strength somehow), and the pressure inside the box moved the magnet enough to pinch the coil. Kinda funny that it pinched it just when the cone was at its peak excursion.

CA glue some type of similar epoxy will work, just make sure you dont put the glue close to the inside of the motor where it could squeeze into the gap
Oh, very good point. Well, I'll give it a shot today or tomorrow maybe and see how I make out.

i guess its possible with gravity, heat, and the coil slamming into the backplate

if you can get it to shift back into place your going to have to figure out a way to keep it secured

i say JB weld FTW
That's a good way to cause a guy to loose a finger.

DO NOT DO THAT

Odds are you are going to hurt yourself. You have to figure out how big of a space you need from the pole to the top plate...

You'll have to grind the top plate down wit a flapper disc, and hit the ferrite a little bit two and wipe both of them down with acetone...

Don't know how you are going to center the top plate back without a jig without loosing a finger getting it caught between the ferrite and the top plate...

he wont be able to get it dead center, but he could clean the ferrite/top plate, put a small amount of whatever adhesive he wants to use on the ferrite/bottom plate then try to place it the top plate down on the bottom plate as close to centered as possible, then use a mallet to carfully hit various spots on the side of the top plate to try to center it up even more

edit: i know this works because ive had to do it before

Don't think you realize that the top plate and assembly is still charged. You have no way of controlling where the top plate or pole piece will go..you simply do not have enough strength in your hand...

I've done it a few times and almost lost a finger, I hate messing with motors that are already charged...it's very very easy to get hurt very badly...magnets hold no mercy to flesh and bone.

i think you misunderstood the way i was telling him to do it, plz read poast #41
