How should subs be mounted to a box?

Hey I was wondering if it matters the way subs are mounted on the box. For example:

X represents subs

and L represents the port

should it be mounted like this:

X .....X..............L

or

X...............L................X?

X L X would be optimal...although I've done it both ways and had no problems.

Doesn't matter, acoustically.

Having a single port system and a common chamber simplifies building because you don't need to build/tune two seperate port systems, but that's the only difference.
