How much watts rms does your stock alty handle?

i have a 85 amp alternator, two optima 34/78 yellow tops and the big 3. i am running a total of 1850 watts rms. my running voltage rarely falls below 13.5 volts and never goes below 13 volts.

This very Q was in a recent issue of PA&S mag.

It was said that your vehicle will use on average 60% of the alt that's stock. So the rest is just math. As it was stated above, as well in the mag, that your listening styles and vehicle will be different for everyone.

So for you, a base reading if you will, is as follows:

110 ampere alt- 66 amperes (the vehicles 60%) that leaves you with 44 amperes.

44 x the avg voltage output of 14.4v = 633.6 watts

So you have up to 633.6 watts via this method of CONSTANT output available. With typical music this is not a problem and could expect 2x that output before you'll need to upgrade the electrical. In short that's 1267.4 watts worth.

BUT, there's another thing we have to consider, your AMPS efficiency. That will need to be considered too.

OP How much power are you running now? Any voltage drop? Are you running an amp on your mids? I would do the big 3 if you were to upgrade in power or not, then add a new/2nd battery as needed. As mentioned earlier this will vary from car to car. You could try it and if you get substantial drops you can make the necessary adjustments.

I always hate these threads, because while the people in them are trying to be helpful and mean well, they end up giving information that may or may not apply to someone elses situation. A stereo does not create a static current draw. The type of music you listen to, how loud you listen to it, and even how often you listen to the stereo while the engine is running, all contribute to whether or not a specific alt will be able to handle a specific stereo/user.

Like I said, no offense to you guys who are trying to help the OP, just saying...
