How much is too much?

I have 2 memphis PR-124D 12" 4ohm DVC and I have a Visonik V2118 Mono block amp. The subs are rated at 250rms . Specs on the amp say that it is capable of putting out 800w rms at 1 ohm . I do not intend to push these subs to the max by any means. Some threads I have read state that it is better to have more power available but not to use it. Is this too much and is it just plain stupid to hook this up at all.

if your amp puts out 800w at 1 ohm, then it only puts out 200w (or less) at 4 ohms....so you'll have nowhere near enough power...so yes, it is plain stupid, but not for the reason you thought

2 4 ohm dvc subs would normally be wired to 1 ohm so you would have the subs getting 500 watts rms and the visonic with gains down should be fine.

For clarification , this amp is monoblock, at 1ohm it puts out 800w rms and 1200w max the 4ohm DVC subs call for 250w rms and 500w max , I have 2 and I plan to wire them in parallel. I only ask again because the first reply to my original Q does not make sense so it confuses me about the second. Hope I made sense.

i bet those memphis woofers would take a little more than rated power //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. as long as you dont clip your gains then you will have nothing to worry about.

oh just to let you know... those amps arent 1 ohm mono stable pimp. they are 2 ohm mono stable and will put out 900 x 1 @ 2 ohms.

To answer the first question, if you have a lot more power than you need you have overhead. Basically, the more overhead the better, as long as your subs aren't getting too much power. More overhead also means better sound, because let's face it, SQ is best at lower volumes. At least that's my experience with every tweeter, mid, and sub I've ever owned.
