How much do you tip?

What exactly do you need? I just want the food, and that's it. I don't want a conversation about my day or their day or whatever. I am not trying to be a smartass, but I don't understand this extra 'service' deal. Do they do a trick when they bring the food out?? I would tip if the server did some gymnastics or something when I got my food, but otherwise the server just went to the back and got the food and brought it to me. How do you do that 'exceptionally'?
If I need something, say I have a nice steak and want some sauce, all I have to do is call them over and they will get it for me immediately...not like applebees or something where I have to wait 10 min...remind them....wait 5 more...call another waitor over...etc.

I want more bread, I get more bread. They check in occasionally but they are presistant like some other resteraunts. If something isnt cooked the way I like it they will take care of it and they take care of it rather quickly. They are actually doing their job.

You have to consider that they are getting paid minimum wadge or LESS to be your servant for over an hour.

If nobody tipped all food would be like red lobster. 15% added automaticlly. In other words, the price of food would be higher because they would have to pay the waiters more.

thats not what good service is about. Good services is knowing the menu and being able to answer questions about it, its being attentive but not overbearing, being able to read when you want something like the check or more bread but not annoying you with unnecessary visits or idle chatter.
x2

Questions about the menu? What questions are there to ask? There is a list of food and you select one? I don't think I have ever asked a question about the food as it has a description next to it. I am beginning to think my social skills are lacking.

I ask for A-1 (etc) with the order. I usually have no problems. If the waitress forgets, there is usually some available at a nearby table. I then walk over there and get it.

I would never take food back at a resturant. It could actually be raw and I would either eat it or not, but food never goes back. I don't trust anyone taking food back and I don't trust places where they don't prepare food in plain sight.

I tip pretty well actually. If its horrible service, I usually still leave a tip (normal tip to others) because most people are having a crappy day and just taking it out on me. So i figure a good tip can help make the day better and maybe they will be nicer to the next table. Normally about 25% is my average tip, they make around 2.15 an hour here in Ohio on straight time.

Now, my companies policy is that you tip heavy for meals as you are representing the company. We took a few people out from japan to a steak house and for the 7 of us the bill was 500 dollars, I tipped 200. Just what we have been told to do.

I'm not talking about the menu at red robin. They should be able to tell you what ingredients are fresh and in season or what wine goes good with your selection, shit like that. Go look at some fine dining menus, i bet you have a question or two. The server should be able to answer most question without having to run back to ask the chef and make recommendations about the menu.

I tip pretty well, being a waiter myself. I take into account for how many people there are in the restuarant and the service. If its average service but a packed restuarant im not going to skimp out only because i can understand how stressfull it can be. But if im the only one there and the waiters are talking to themselves and not refilling my drinks... then not too much.

all depends.

take for instance my last two trips to Lonestar Steakhouse. from me its id say a 30-40 minute drive.

my earlier trip, got a waitress that was slow to come get an order, refilled drinks pretty much only when we were about to leave, and checked back with us once throughout our 1.5hr stay. we ordered ~$50 in food. (me and my girlfriend) for her shitty service, she got $1 just because thats the smallest thing i had on me although i should have left her nothing.

my latest trip, got a waiter that was over within the 1st 30 seconds of us sitting down ready to take our order, we ordered ~$75 in food that night. (me and my girlfriend) service was exceptional, food was perfect, and he was there right when we needed a refill, didnt even have to ask. while we were there i saw the waitress we had prior talk to him and look over at us with a ****ed up glare, i know what she told him. the service didnt change. he went home with a 100% tip that night, and the earlier waitress was mad as ****.

worth the extra money, id say. i was laughing my *** off... too bad she didnt come by and say something, that would have made my night //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I would hope all ingredients are fresh...or as as fresh as could be expected. The only fine dining I did was with the state legislature and I didn't pick the food, they just gave it to me. I didn't like how they put the steak on top of the potatoes. The food was okay, I would have rather had taco bell.

About 20-25% also. I ****in pisses me the hell off when my friends dont even leave a 5% tip cuz they are cheap skate bastards. I ALWAYS leave a tip even if I have to leave every single dollar in my pocket.

Too lazy to read all the posts but I've been a server or a bartender for a LONG TIME and it pisses me off when people are cheap. Servers make like 2.65 an hour (I make 3.50, only cuz it's a really up-scale place but I was at places like Red Robin and Chili's before) and people assume you get paid a good hourly wage when ya don't. PLUS servers have to claim their tips so their wage gets deducted even further.

I've come to the conclusion that many states need to increase their minimum wage ...
Here in BC, the minimum wage is $8/hour which, at today's exchange rate, is equal to $7.05/hour in US dollars ...

I'm not crying myself to sleep when I don't tip knowing they're still making $8/hour ...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but every restaurant I've worked at said that in Canada (at least around the border here) tips are already included in checks, that's why Canadians are VERY WELL KNOWN for being bad tippers when they come to town......

you tip for the experience, if you dont care about that then just go to mcdonalds or stay at home. theres no point in going to a restraunt if you're just going to be a prick or dont understand the concept. if you want to be upset or be an ***.... just stay home, its much cheaper and less of a tax on everyone else. not to mention that server gets paid just enough to cover tax's.
