how hard to install into a pontiac sunfire.

first off never did an alarm install.

2nd installed many car steros/amps, know how to solder.

3rd, i'm not a noob, with an engineering degree, i understand most electronics, and theorys behind how they work.

Will only do it if it saves me money + I actually learn something.

if i'm going to save 200-300 bucks, its worth my time, if im going to save 100 its not.

Looking at the 2 way vipers with(out) remote start. I dont see a need for the remote start in my car, but if it will add value i'll do it.

Car is a 2 door sunfire 2001, without any power door locks. (I will be added a autoloc kit to correct this, 2 actuarors with relays, 5 wire system).

I know the trunk has a light, so i'm guessing a pin would not be needed for that.

How hard would it be to this install?

What problems are their with a 2001 gm sunfire that I would have to look for? anything speical?

Nope, thats car is one of the easiest cars to work on the only thing i think youll have trouble with is Diode Isolating the door triggers

PONTIAC, SUNFIRE, 2001, Door Trigger

The green/black is located in the lower drivers kick panel. It catches the drivers door only. The light blue is located in the lower passenger kick panel, and catches the passenger door(s). Tap both wires and diode isolate each. Also found at BCM.

did anyone ever contact you about the recall on the sunfire motors? i forget which one but the sunfires/cavaliers had a recall to put a relay somewhere in the motor. had a friends randomly catch fire and burn to the ground.

my girlfriend also had an 02 and pontiac contacted her and made her take it in for service immediately....... figured id let you know....id look into it. although you might not want to. my friend sued and pontiac settled and he was able to pay cash for a brand new cadillac ha ha. pontiac never told him about the recall.

I know about the recall. but dont know if it was ever done, even though its been at the dealer a few times. I wonder if they missed it.

thanks for the tip.

i'm going to search: but diode isolating? i've read about it a few times, what does this invole, why does it need to be done?

found the info on 12volt.com

hehe, I get it now. even though i dont think it would matter, because with an after market radio I have no door chimes. and the sunfire doesn't tell me which/if a door is open. seems easy to do though, so it wont hurt to do it right.

thanks for all the help guys.

american tv is having a sale this week, i'll see what there cost is. But it doesn't seem to terrible. I think if I take my time and label each wire on the bench. Take out the mulit-meter this won't be too bad. Just have to take my time.

BTW, whats a good afforadble solder tool. I have one from radio shack but it kind of blows.

Also one more question. Do I have to worry about the passlock, or passkey, or whatever gm calls it?

If I was going to add remote start, then what do I have to do for the pass key?

I still haven't picked an alarm, but the difference in price is about 10-20 dollars (online)... So i'm leaning towards remote start..

If I was going to add remote start, then what do I have to do for the pass key?

you have to measure the resistance across two wires in the pass key circuit with the key in the ignition and the ignition turned on, then you hard wire that resistance amount into the circuit. passlock II I believe, there are boxes you can buy that will do it as well.

Not hard at all. Depending on the year they should just fall apart by themselves. All you have to do is install the system and then put the pieces back together with some epoxy.

well if you dont diode isolate the door triggers, the alarm wont be set off if a door is opened.
Sorry but thats not true. If he werent to diode isolate it would work fine, it would just common the driver door trigger ciruit with the other door triggers circuit.

While not a good idea, generally the only downfall is if you have one door open the instrument cluster will show that you have all open. While I definitely don't recommend commoning the two circuits, you're alarm would still trigger fine.

when I saw the diagarm at 12volt, I figured out what the diodes were for.

Car i'm only going to keep for a year or 2 long. And remote start is looking like more of a hassle for my first install then I will use.

Will probably end up with a simple viper 1002 or something along those lines.

american tv for a 2 way unit still wanted like 350 installed + tax. I'm hoping to get a simple unit for about 100 bucks. 2 way i found some on hooked for like 150.

I do have one more question. The alarms say they have relays for door locks. I'm getting an autolock power door lock system with 2 actutors and the autoloc control/brain.

Would I still use the relays that come with the autoloc? or just the alarm?
