How do you make ports like these?

All that is is a piece of MDF attached to a piece of PVC, then gone over with a 1/2" roundover.

Not exactly a "flared" port.

its a 1inch round over bit just so you know...
and which would you prefer to see in a home theatre setup?

some ugly, non flush mounted PVC pipe, or a nicely rounded port, with the roundover as part of the baffel...
Do you have a table router in order to use a 1" roundover? I haven't seen many 1" roundovers designed for a handheld router.

And the PVC can be sanded and painted, it actually looks very nice if done properly. And it can be flushmounted too. How do you think they are attached to a box?

Plus with this way you can adjust the tuning, and reuse the port flares. With your way (attached to the MDF thats used as a baffle), you'd have to use a different port for every box you use unless you chop it up somehow. The pic you posted isn't flush-mounted, so i'm not sure how that applies to the question you posed.
